Enormous breakthrough in the production of soldier flies

The productivity of the insect producer ENORM increased by 20 percent after the installation of lighting designed for the needs of the flies.

Soldier fly larvae are an important source of insect protein increasingly used in various food and feed products. To ensure optimal production of these protein-rich insects, precise light control and extremely durable fixtures are required.

In 2022, the Østbirk-based company ENORM faced challenges with their existing lighting system. However, RN-Solutions, a leading provider of specialized lighting for livestock facilities, presented a solution to ENORM that set them apart from other competitors.

Rune Qvist Nielsen, CEO of RN-Solutions, offered ENORM the opportunity to test various light sources and proposals to find the optimal solution for soldier fly production. The close collaboration to find the ideal solution was decisive for CTO Arne Holst Lauridsen's choice of lighting supplier.

"Rune Qvist Nielsen provided some light and suggestions that we could test together. Then, we had our R&D department examine the effect on the flies. So, I would say the choice fell on RN-Solutions due to a combination of Rune's willingness regarding the project and their technical expertise, along with their delivery guarantee," explained Arne Holst Lauridsen.

And the flies responded

RN-Solutions developed specialized fixtures with IP69K certification, indicating their extreme water resistance, a crucial factor for success in the humid environment where the flies thrive. In addition to meeting environmental requirements, the fixtures also contain carefully selected color spectra that contribute to the well-being of the flies. Rune Qvist Nielsen is not surprised that the flies thrive under these robust light sources.

"It's a combination of several light colors, but to us humans, it appears greenish. The color spectrum seems pleasant to the flies, making them more productive. It's actually like that with all animals," says Rune Qvist Nielsen.

The results of the custom-designed lighting were impressive. Arne Holst Lauridsen estimates that fly productivity has increased by up to 20 percent. Additionally, energy consumption has been reduced by around 30 percent, thanks to the fixtures' energy efficiency.

"We can see that the flies have really responded well to the new lighting, and their egg-laying has increased," says Arne Holst Lauridsen.

Not just a lamp
The collaboration between ENORM and RN-Solutions has not only led to the development of specialized lighting for the flies, but RN-Solutions has also provided standard lighting for ENORM's halls, and the lighting expert has maintained a 5-year warranty for the fixtures in the challenging production environment.

This holistic approach to lighting provided by RN Solutions allows ENORM to focus on their core business without employees having to worry about lighting aspects of production.

"Well, both these specialized fixtures and standard fixtures, they work, and it's something I also expect will continue to work. RN-Solutions has set it up to match the warranty. They sold it as a solution, not just a lamp. It really helps me not to have to spend a lot of energy on it," says Arne Holst Lauridsen.

And there's a good reason why Arne Lauridsen appreciates the warranty, as the fly environment is extremely harsh for the production facility, with humidity often exceeding 80 percent.

"Other suppliers might have just given us the warranty, and if something broke, we would have to provide a lot of evidence for it to be replaced. RN-Solutions has set it up according to what they assess it should withstand," says Arne Holst Lauridsen.

Facts:

Lighting solutions from RN Solutions are long-lasting, with 5 to 10 years of warranty provided for the products.

All equipment from RN Solutions is waterproof and "anti-corrosive" protected, capable of withstanding exposure to salt, ammonia, cleaning agents, and certain acids, among other things.

For coating/sealing LED diodes, RN Solutions uses a coating developed for the U.S. military to protect their electronics under any imaginable stress. It's a special product that offers the best possible protection for the electronics in the products.
