The right LED lighting in poultry houses is not only about energy consumption. Colours, lux level, light distribution and durability affect both bird behaviour, welfare and day-to-day production.
Contact usWhen we talk about efficient poultry production today, it is not only about feed, ventilation and house layout. Lighting plays a much larger role than many people realise.
At RN Solutions, we have worked closely with both egg producers and broiler farmers in Denmark and abroad, and one thing is clear: The right lighting can make a noticeable difference – both to bird behaviour and to the bottom line.
Colours that make a difference
Lighting is not only about being able to see what is happening in the house. For poultry, the colour and intensity of the light influence behaviour, welfare and production.
By adjusting the colour spectrum and the positioning of the luminaires, you can, for example, help prevent floor eggs, reduce pecking behaviour and improve egg quality.
Red light in the right zones
Red light can be used strategically in nest and laying areas where calm behaviour, control and stability are important parameters.
Blue light as floor lighting
Blue light can help reduce unrest and is often used strategically on floor areas to reduce the risk of floor eggs.
Green light for broilers
Green light is used in several modern solutions for broilers, where it can support calm behaviour, activity and growth.
Colour spectrum, positioning and control should be adapted to the type of production. We help you find the right solution.
How much light is actually needed?
One of the questions we often receive is: “How many lux do I need?”
Of course, this depends on the house type and production system, but the following general guidelines can be used as a starting point.
Layers
As a general rule, 10–30 lux at bird height is often used, depending on the system, age, behaviour and production strategy.
Broilers during start-up
During the start-up phase, 20–50 lux is typically used, after which the level can gradually be reduced to 5–20 lux depending on the programme and production.
Measure the light correctly
Birds perceive light differently and often more strongly than humans. Measurements should therefore be carried out with suitable equipment, such as a spectrometer, rather than relying only on traditional lux meters.
Luminaires built for everyday farm conditions
Poultry houses are demanding environments. Ammonia, moisture, dust and cleaning are part of everyday operation. This places high demands on the lighting.
At RN Solutions, we only use luminaires developed for livestock environments. This means solutions with high protection, stable light and options for dimming and control.
With the right solution, you get a comfortable and stable lighting environment, light sources that last – even during washing and heavy use – and the option of sunrise and sunset control.

Easy to install – easy to adjust
With our Plug 'N Play™ system, installation is simple, and all accessories – cables, connectors and controls – are thoroughly tested and adapted to livestock environments.
We also offer a free light calculation, so you get the right number of luminaires optimally distributed in your house. This provides more uniform lighting, fewer dark zones and better opportunities to control production.
