This Is Why Lux Drops Faster Than You Think – and What It Means for Your Production

It’s not about lumens, but about lux – and it can affect your entire operation
Lumens shine – but lux makes the difference
In modern agricultural production, LED has become the standard choice. It saves energy and offers long life. But there’s a crucial difference between the amount of light emitted (lumens) and the amount of light that actually reaches the relevant areas in the barn (lux). And it’s the lux level that determines whether the light actually works in practice. Lux is the light that reaches the floor, the feeding troughs, and the animals – and it governs behavior, monitoring, and productivity.
When lux drops, so does your overview
Barn environments are tough. High humidity, ammonia, dust, and frequent cleaning quickly take a toll on even the best fixtures. Surfaces get covered by invisible films that alter light distribution and reduce the amount of light at animal level. Even if the LED technically still works, the lux level drops, and certain areas become darker. This affects both animal behavior and your ability to monitor their well-being. The result is often that diseases are detected later, heat cycles are missed, and growth becomes less stable.
The SPEED-LIGHT™ series was developed for exactly that problem
At RN Solutions, we developed the SPEED-LIGHT™ series to withstand the harsh conditions found in agriculture. The fixtures are IP69K-certified, making them completely sealed against dust, water, and high-pressure washing. They are equipped with specially coated LED diodes to ensure brightness remains high – even over time and in barns with high ammonia levels. The light is also Flicker Free, providing a stable and comfortable light that doesn’t stress animals or staff. Installation and maintenance have also been carefully considered. SPEED-LIGHT™ fixtures feature molded connectors, rodent-proof cables, and are ready for both fixed installation and the RNS Plug 'N Play solution.
Stable lighting is more than comfort – it’s management
A consistent and correct lighting environment is not just about visibility. It’s a tool you actively use to control production. When the lighting is right, animals respond naturally. They eat more, move better, and you as the farm manager have a much better chance of observing and acting in time. Daily inspections also become easier and more accurate. Conversely, dark zones and uneven lighting are sources of stress, restlessness, and inefficiency. That’s why stable lux levels should be seen as a critical operational parameter – not just a detail.
When lux drops, efficiency drops
Lux levels are not something you can take for granted – especially not in barns. They drop faster than you think, and the consequences can be significant. With the fixtures in the SPEED-LIGHT™ series, you get a solution built for real-world farming – where lighting must do more than look good: it must work, every single day.
